RESUMO

The Brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens Stål; BPH) is known to cause significant damage to rice crops in Asia, and the use of host-resistant varieties is an effective and environmentally friendly approach for controlling BPH. However, genes limited resistance genes that are used in insect-resistant rice breeding programs, and landrace rice varieties are materials resources that carry rich and versatile genes for BPH resistance. Two landrace indica rice accessions, CL45 and CL48, are highly resistant to BPH and show obvious antibiosis against BPH. A novel resistance locus linked to markers 12M16.983 and 12M19.042 was identified, mapped to chromosome 12 in CL45, and designated Bph46. It was finely mapped to an interval of 480 kb and Gene 3 may be the resistance gene. Another resistance locus linked to markers RM26567 and 11MA104 was identified and mapped to chromosome 11 in CL48 and designated qBph11.3 according to the nominating rule. It was finely mapped to an interval of 145 kb, and LOC_Os11g29090 and LOC_Os11g29110 may be the resistance genes. Moreover, two markers, 12M16.983 and 11MA104, were developed for CL45 and CL48, respectively, using marker-assisted selection (MAS) and were confirmed by backcrossing individuals and phenotypic detection. Interestingly, we found that the black glume color is closely linked to the BPH resistance gene in CL48 and can effectively assist in the identification of positive individuals for breeding. Finally, several near-isogenic lines with a 9311 or KW genetic background, as well as pyramid lines with two resistance parents, were developed using MAS and exhibited significantly high resistance against BPHs.

Objective: To explore the modulations of electroacupuncture in subjective tinnitus (ST) by comparing the difference of functional connectivity (FC) in ST patients and healthy volunteers between the insular (INS) and the whole brain region. Methods: A total of 34 ST patients were selected into electroacupuncture group (EG) and 34 age- and sex-matched normal subjects were recruited into control group (CG). The EG received acupuncture at SI19 (Tinggong), GB11 (Touqiaoyin), TE17 (Yifeng), GV20 (Baihui), GV15 (Yamen), GV14 (Dazhui), SJ13 (Zhongzhu), among which the points of SI19 and GB11 were connected to the electroacupuncture instrument with the density wave of 2/50 Hz, and 3 treatments per week for 10 sessions in total. The severity of tinnitus was evaluated by Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), the hearing status was recorded using pure tone audiometry, and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) was performed on the brain before and after treatment, the CG received no intervention yet only rs-fMRI data were collected. Results: With the electroacupuncture treatment, the total THI score, average air conduction threshold of patients of EG were significantly lower than before (p < 0.01), and the total effective rate was 88.24%. Compared with CG, FC of ST patients between INS and left superior temporal gyrus and right hippocampal significantly decreased before treatment, while FC of ST patients between INS and right superior frontal gyrus, left middle frontal gyrus and right anterior cuneus significantly decreased after treatment (voxel p < 0.001, cluster p < 0.05, corrected with GRF). FC of ST patients between the INS and right middle frontal gyrus, left superior frontal gyrus and right paracentral lobule showed a significant decrease after treatment (voxel p < 0.001, cluster p < 0.05, corrected with GRF). In addition, THI score in EG was negatively correlated with the reduction of FC value in INS-left superior frontal gyrus before treatment (r = -0.41, p = 0.017). Therefore, this study suggests that abnormal FC of INS may be one of the significant central mechanisms of ST patients and can be modulated by electroacupuncture. Discussion: Electroacupuncture treatment can effectively reduce or eliminate tinnitus symptoms in ST patients and improve the hearing by decreasing FC between the INS and the frontal and temporal brain regions.

PURPOSE: Depression is one of the main psychological responses experienced by patients with breast cancer perioperatively. Therefore, this review aimed to synthesize the prevalence rate of depression preoperatively among patients with breast cancer. METHODS: Six databases were searched for published articles, which recruited female patients aged 18 years and above, diagnosed with breast cancer and planned for breast surgery. Grey literatures were searched from ProQuest Theses and Dissertations, Science.gov and CogPrints. Studies published in English from the inception of databases to January 2023 were considered. Two reviewers screened, extracted, and appraised the data independently. Joanna Briggs Institute data collection form was used for data collection. Hoy's Risk of Bias Tool was utilized to assess the individual study's quality. Review Manager 5.4 software was utilized for meta-analysis. Subgroup analyses were conducted to explore the reasons for any heterogeneity. Publication bias was evaluated by Egger's test and funnel plot. RESULTS: Twenty studies involving 32,143 patients with breast cancer were included. Meta-analyses revealed an overall preoperative prevalence of 30% among all studies. Subgroup analyses showed that studies conducted in the Middle East and North Africa used purposive sampling, with patients undergoing mastectomy and lumpectomy and with moderate risk of bias reported higher prevalence of preoperative depression (54%, 44%, 40%, and 49%, respectively) as compared to other respective subgroups. CONCLUSION: The high prevalence of preoperative depression among women with breast cancer indicated the need for health care professionals to provide more psychological support to them.

BACKGROUND: Prompt pathogen identification can have a substantial impact on the optimization of antimicrobial treatment. The objective of the study was to assess the diagnostic value of next-generation sequencing (NGS) for identifying pathogen and its clinical impact on antimicrobial intervention in immunocompromised patients with suspected infections. METHODS: This was a retrospective study. Between January and August 2020, 47 adult immunocompromised patients underwent NGS testing under the following clinical conditions: 1) prolonged fever and negative conventional cultures; 2) new-onset fever despite empiric antimicrobial treatment; and 3) afebrile with suspected infections on imaging. Clinical data, including conventional microbial test results and antimicrobial treatment before and after NGS, were collected. Data were analyzed according to documented changes in antimicrobial treatment (escalated, no change, or de-escalated) after the NGS results. RESULTS: The median time from hospitalization to NGS sampling was 19 d. Clinically relevant pathogens were detected via NGS in 61.7% of patients (29/47), more than half of whom suffered from fungemia (n=17), resulting in an antimicrobial escalation in 53.2% of patients (25/47) and antimicrobial de-escalation in 0.2% of patients (1/47). Antimicrobial changes were mostly due to the identification of fastidious organisms such as Legionella, Pneumocystis jirovecii, and Candida. In the remaining three cases, NGS detected clinically relevant pathogens also detected by conventional cultures a few days later. The antimicrobial treatment was subsequently adjusted according to the susceptibility test results. Overall, NGS changed antimicrobial management in 55.3% (26/47) of patientst, and conventional culture detected clinically relevant pathogens in only 14.9% of patients (7/47). CONCLUSION: With its rapid identification and high sensitivity, NGS could be a promising tool for identifying relevant pathogens and enabling rapid appropriate treatment in immunocompromised patients with suspected infections.

This study focused on identifying potential key lncRNAs associated with gout under the mechanisms of copper death and iron death through ceRNA network analysis and Random Forest (RF) algorithm, which aimed to provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms of gout, and potential molecular targets for future therapeutic strategies of gout. Initially, we conducted an in-depth bioinformatics analysis of gout microarray chips to screen the key cuproptosis-related genes (CRGs) and key ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs). Using these data, we constructed a key ceRNA network for gout. Finally, key lncRNAs associated with gout were identified through the RF algorithm combined with ROC curves, and validated using the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD). We successfully identified NLRP3, LIPT1, and DBT as key CRGs associated with gout, and G6PD, PRKAA1, LIG3, PHF21A, KLF2, PGRMC1, JUN, PANX2, and AR as key FRGs associated with gout. The key ceRNA network identified four downregulated key lncRNAs (SEPSECS-AS1, LINC01054, REV3L-IT1, and ZNF883) along with three downregulated mRNAs (DBT, AR, and PRKAA1) based on the ceRNA theory. According to CTD validation inference scores and biological functions of target mRNAs, we identified a potential gout-associated lncRNA ZNF883/hsa-miR-539-5p/PRKAA1 regulatory axis. This study identified the key lncRNA ZNF883 in the context of copper death and iron death mechanisms related to gout for the first time through the application of ceRNA network analysis and the RF algorithm, thereby filling a research gap in this field and providing new insights into the molecular mechanisms of gout. We further found that lncRNA ZNF883 might function in gout patients by regulating PRKAA1, the mechanism of which was potentially related to uric acid reabsorption in the proximal renal tubules and inflammation regulation. The proposed lncRNA ZNF883/hsa-miR-539-5p/PRKAA1 regulatory axis might represent a potential RNA regulatory pathway for controlling the progression of gout disease. This discovery offered new molecular targets for the treatment of gout, and had significant implications for future therapeutic strategies in managing the gout.

In humans, gut microbiota can determine the health status. The regulatory mechanisms of the gut microbiota in asthma must be elucidated. Although antibiotics (ABXs) can clear infections, they markedly alter the composition and abundance of gut microbiota. The present study used ABX-treated mice to examine the time-dependent effects of ABX administration on the gut microbiota and intestinal mucosal barrier. The mouse asthma model was established using ovalbumin (OVA) and gavaged with an ABX cocktail for different durations (1 or 2 weeks) and stacked sequences. The pathology of the model, model 2, OVA-ABX, OVA-ABX 2, ABX-OVA and ABX-OVA was severe when compared with the control group as evidenced by the following results: i) significantly increased pulmonary and colonic inflammatory cell infiltration; ii) enhanced pause values and iii) OVA-induced immunoglobulin E (IgE) and TGF-ß expression levels, and significantly downregulated Tight Junction Protein 1 (TJP1), claudin 1 and Occludin expression levels. Furthermore, the intestinal bacterial load in the OVA-ABX and OVA-ABX 2 groups was significantly lower than that in the ABX-OVA and ABX-OVA 2 groups, respectively. The predominant taxa were as follows: phyla, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, genera, Escherichia-Shigella, Lactobacillus and Lachnospira. The abundances of Lachnospira and Escherichia-Shigella were correlated with the expression of OVA-induced IgE and TJPs. These findings indicated that ABX administration, which modifies microbiome diversity and bacterial abundance, can disrupt colonic integrity, downregulate TJ proteins, damage the intestinal barrier, enhance enterocyte permeability, and promote the release of inflammatory factors, adversely affecting asthma alleviation and long-term repair.

OBJECTIVES: This review aims to examine the ceiling effects of EQ-5D-3L (3L) and EQ-5D-5L (5L) in general adult populations and identify the factors influencing these effects. METHODS: We searched 8 databases for observational studies published in English from inception to 24 July 2023. Ceiling effects were calculated by dividing the number of participants reporting full health at dimension or profile level by the total sample size. Subgroup analysis and meta-regression using the metafor package in R software were performed. RESULTS: We identified 94 studies from 70 articles, including 4 543 647 adults across 37 countries. The global pooled proportion of individuals reporting full health ("11111") was 56% (95% CI 51%-62%) for 3L and 49% (95% CI 44%-54%) for 5L. The self-care dimension showed the highest ceiling effects (3L: 97%; 5L: 94%), whereas pain/discomfort had the lowest (3L: 69%; 5L: 60%). The ceiling effects in East/South-East Asia were higher than in Europe by 25% (95% CI 18%-32%) in 3L and 9% (95% CI -2%-20%) in 5L. Adjusting for mean age and proportion of males, significant regional differences persisted in the overall profile level of 3L, in all 3L dimensions (except for self-care), and 5L dimensions (except for pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression). CONCLUSIONS: This review highlights significant ceiling effects in the EQ-5D, especially in Asian populations. The 5L version exhibited fewer ceiling effects than the 3L, indicating its superiority for general population surveys. Further research is crucial to understand the disparities in self-reported health outcomes between Asians and other populations.

OBJECTIVES: This study intended to develop a new immunogenic cell death (ICD)-related prognostic signature for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) algorithm was adopted to cluster tumor samples based on ICD gene expression to obtain ICD-related subtypes. Survival analysis and immune microenvironment analysis were conducted among different subtypes. Regression analysis was used to construct the model. Based on riskscore median, cancer patients were classified into high and low risk groups, and independent prognostic ability of the model was analyzed. The CIBERSORT algorithm was adopted to determine the immune infiltration level of both groups. RESULTS: We analyzed the differential genes between cluster 4 and cluster 1-3 and obtained 12 genes with the best prognostic features finally (NLGN1, SLC30A3, C3orf20, ADAD2, ATOH1, ATP6V1B1, KCNQ2, MUCL3, RGCC, CLEC17A, COL6A5, and INSL4). In addition, patients with lower risk had higher levels of infiltration of most immune cells, lower Tumor Immune Dysfunction and Exclusion (TIDE) level and higher immunophenscore (IPS) level than those with higher risk. CONCLUSIONS: This study constructed and validated the ICD feature signature predicting CRC prognosis and provide a reference criteria for guiding the prognosis and immunotherapy of CRC cancer patients.

Two novel vanadoborate compounds, [Cu(en)2]3[Li(H2O)]4[Li(H2O)3]2[V12B18O50(OH)10(H2O)]2·33.5H2O (1) and (H2en)4[Li(H2O)]4[V12B18O55(OH)5(H2O)]·14H2O (2), were synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis under identical conditions except for temperature. Structural analysis revealed that although both contain [V12B18O60]n- cluster anion, the different countercations potentially lead to variations in the [V12B18O60]n- cluster anion skeletons. In compound 1, the V4+/V5+ ratio was 10:2; while in compound 2 the ratio was 11:1. It is speculated that different countercations may influence the valence states of cluster anions. In this study, quantum chemical calculations revealed that the aromaticity and activity of the two compounds were different, and two-dimensional correlation infrared spectroscopy (2D-COS-IR) under magnetic perturbation confirmed that distinct response peaks of functional group vibrations to the magnetic field due to the different V4+/V5+ ratios and aromaticity of the two compounds. An electrochemical analysis revealed that compound 2 exhibits higher electrocatalytic activity. The results of quantum chemical calculations are aligned not only with the changes in the 2D-COS-IR spectra but also with the conclusions obtained from experiments on electrochemical properties. Overall, this work proposes a novel strategy for interpreting the alteration of vanadoborate anionic skeleton due to the introduction of different countercations by combining 2D-COS-IR with quantum chemical calculations.

Frailty is a prevalent condition amongst older adults, significantly affecting their quality of life. The FRAIL tool has been purposefully designed for clinical application by assisting healthcare professionals in identifying and managing frailty-related issues in older adults, making it a preferred choice for assessing frailty across diverse older populations. This review aimed to synthesize the measurement properties and feasibility of FRAIL. Guided by COSMIN guidelines, seven databases were searched from inception to 31 Mar 2023. The measurement properties were extracted for quality appraisal of the populations in the studied samples. Where possible, random-effects meta-analysis and meta-regression were used for quantitative synthesis. Eighteen articles containing 273 tests were drawn from 14 different populations. We found that populations testing for criterion validity had high-quality ratings, while construct validity ratings varied based on health status and geographical region. Test-retest reliability had sufficient quality ratings, while scale agreement had sufficient ratings in only four out of 14 populations tested. Responsiveness ratings were insufficient in seven out of eight populations, with inconsistent ratings in one population. Our analysis of missing data across three articles showed a 16.3% rate, indicating good feasibility of the FRAIL. FRAIL is a feasible tool for assessing frailty of older adults in community settings, with good criterion validity and test-retest reliability. However, more research is needed on construct validity and responsiveness.

Non-union fractures pose a significant clinical challenge, often leading to prolonged pain and disability. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying non-union fractures is crucial for developing effective therapeutic interventions. This study integrates bioinformatics analysis and experimental validation to unravel key genes and pathways associated with non-union fractures. We identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between non-union and fracture healing tissues using bioinformatics techniques. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses were employed to elucidate the biological processes and pathways involved. Common DEGs were identified, and a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed. Fibronectin-1 (FN1), Thrombospondin-1 (THBS1), and Biglycan (BGN) were pinpointed as critical target genes for non-union fracture treatment. Experimental validation involved alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Alizarin Red staining to confirm osteogenic differentiation. Our analysis revealed significant alterations in pathways related to cell behavior, tissue regeneration, wound healing, infection, and immune responses in non-union fracture tissues. FN1, THBS1, and BGN were identified as key genes, with their upregulation indicating potential disruptions in the bone remodeling process. Experimental validation confirmed the induction of osteogenic differentiation. The study provides comprehensive insights into the molecular mechanisms of non-union fractures, emphasizing the pivotal roles of FN1, THBS1, and BGN in extracellular matrix dynamics and bone regeneration. The findings highlight potential therapeutic targets and pathways for further investigation. Future research should explore interactions between these genes, validate results using in vivo fracture models, and develop tailored treatment strategies for non-union fractures, promising significant advances in clinical management.

The prevalence of overweight and obesity has continued to increase globally, and one-size-fits-all dietary recommendations may not be suitable for different individual characteristics. A personalized nutrition intervention may be a potential solution. This review aims to evaluate the effects of the technology-delivered personalized nutrition intervention on energy, fat, vegetable, and fruit intakes among adults with overweight and obesity. A three-step comprehensive search strategy was performed from 10 databases and seven clinical registries in published and unpublished trials. A total of 46 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 19,670 adults with overweight and obesity from 14 countries are included. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were conducted. Meta-analyses showed a reduction of energy intake (-128.05, 95% CI: -197.08, -59.01) and fat intake (-1.81% energy/days, 95% CI: -3.38, -0.24, and -0.19 scores, 95% CI: -0.40, 0.02) in the intervention compared with the comparator. Significant improvements in vegetable and fruit intakes with 0.12-0.15 servings/day were observed in the intervention. Combined one- and two-way interactions had a greater effect on energy intake reduction compared with their counterparts. Meta-regression analyses revealed that no significant covariates were found. Given that the certainty of the evidence was rated as low or very low, further well-designed RCTs with long-term follow-up are warranted.

The self-management education for patients with hypertension has not been widely provided in rural areas of China. Our study aimed to examine the effect of health coaching intervention on controlling BP and improving self-management skills among rural resident of ≤6 month-history of hypertension. A total of 102 participants were enrolled in the RCT. The control group received usual health guidance and follow-up management; the experimental group received health coaching and follow up management. The primary outcomes were the difference in changes of BP and mean self-management scores. The secondary outcomes included waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), and medication literacy. Participants in the experimental group showed a significantly greater improvement with respect to systolic BP and diastolic BP respectively (133.85 ± 4.74 mmHg vs 127.96 ± 5.42 mmHg;80.94 ± 5.52 mmHg vs 77.37 ± 4.44 mmHg, P < 0.05) and BMI (24.66 ± 2.19 kg/m2 vs 23.44 ± 2.05 kg/m2, P < 0.05) compared with the control group. A significant difference was also observed between the experimental and control groups in terms of self-management and medication literacy at both 3 and 6 months (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in changes of waist circumferences between the two groups (22.6% vs 38.8%). In conclusion, for patients with diagnosed with hypertension within the last 6 months, health coaching maybe is an effective approach to control blood pressure and improve medication literacy and self-management skills.

Background: Lymphomas originating in bone but not involving visceral or regional lymph nodes are diagnosed as primary bone lymphoma (PBL). Few case reports of anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL) originating in bone have been reported. The purpose of this report is to describe the difficulty in diagnosing and complete treatment process of this rare type of bone lymphoma. Case Description: We describe a case of anaplastic lymphoma kinase positive (ALK+) ALCL patient with primary multiple bone lesions. The patient was initially in the local hospital due to lumbosacral pain and was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. However, after receiving two cycles of bortezomib, lenalidomide and dexamethasone (VRD) chemotherapy, the patient's pain increased. After discussion with the patient and his family, the patient finally agreed to accept the biopsy of the T10 and L2 vertebral bodies and diagnosed as ALK+ ALCL stage IV with primary bone involvement. After receiving multiple cycles of chemotherapy, local bone radiotherapy and denosumab treatment, the patient's bone pain and osteolytic lesions were improved. Regular follow-up shows that the patient's bone pain has been controlled and he is generally in good condition. Conclusions: ALK+ ALCL originating primarily in the bone may be easily misdiagnosed and hence require appropriate evaluation in the upfront setting. In consideration of the lack of relevant experience due to the rarity of the disease, choosing a suitable treatment regimen requires comprehensive consideration. In the next clinical work, we must observe relevant cases to summarize the treatment experience better.

BACKGROUND: Malignant melanoma is the leading cause of skin cancer-related death, with high malignancy and rapid progression. Total glucosides of paeony (TGP) are extracted from the roots of Paeonia Lactiflora Pall and are widely used in the treatment of chronic hepatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and adjuvant therapy of tumor chemotherapy. METHODS: In the present research, M14 and A375 cells were treated with TGP. CCK8, transwell and western blotting were performed to analyze the effect of TGP on cell function. RESULTS: TGP treatment impeded the proliferation and migration and activated the apoptosis pathway in melanoma cells. Importantly, TGP induced the degradation of α5-nAChR. Overexpression of α5-nAChR inhibited the anti-cancer effect of TGP. In addition, TGP treatment released cytochrome c from mitochondria into the cytoplasm, inducing mitochondrial dysfunction in melanoma cells. TGP also inhibited the phosphorylation of P38-MAPK, and P38-MAPK inhibitor reduced the promoting effect of α5-nAChR in cell proliferation and migration. CONCLUSION: TGP inhibited cell viability and migration and induced mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis by promoting the degradation of α5-nAChR in melanoma cells. This research provided a potential therapeutic anti-cancer drug for treatment strategies of melanoma.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) represents a major global health burden as a result of its high incidence and poor prognosis. The present study examined the role of the programmed cell death (PCD) pathway and identified key genes influencing the prognosis of patients with GC. METHODS: Bioinformatics analysis, machine learning techniques and survival analysis were systematically integrated to identify core prognostic genes from the The Cancer Genome Atlas Stomach Adenocarcinoma (TCGA-STAD) dataset. A prognostic model was then developed to stratify patients into high-risk and low-risk groups, and further validated in the GSE84437 dataset. The model also demonstrated clinical relevance with tumor staging and histopathology. Immune infiltration analysis and the potential benefits of immunotherapy for each risk group were assessed. Finally, subgroup analysis was performed based on the expression of three key prognostic genes. RESULTS: Three core prognostic genes (CAV1, MMP9 and MAGEA3) were identified. The prognostic model could effectively differentiate patients into high-risk and low-risk groups, leading to significantly distinct survival outcomes. Increased immune cell infiltration was observed in the high-risk group, and better potential for immunotherapy outcomes was observed in the low-risk group. Pathways related to cancer progression, such as epithelial-mesenchymal transition and tumor necrosis factor-α signaling via nuclear factor-kappa B, were enriched in the high-risk group. By contrast, the low-risk group showed a number of pathways associated with maintenance of cell functionality and immune responses. The two groups differed in gene mutation patterns and drug sensitivities. Subgroup analysis based on the expression of the three key genes revealed two distinct clusters with distinct survival outcomes, tumor immune microenvironment characteristics and pathway enrichment. CONCLUSIONS: The present study offers novel insights into the significance of PCD pathways and identifies key genes associated with the prognosis of patients with GC. This robust prognostic model, along with the delineation of distinct risk groups and molecular subtypes, provides valuable tools for risk stratification, treatment selection and personalized therapeutic interventions for GC.

OBJECTIVE: Sarcopenia is a common condition among patients with cancer. To better understand the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), we analysed the risk factors of sarcopenia and developed a theoretical foundation for further development of sarcopenia prevention and treatment strategies. METHODS: Six hundred and seventeen patients with HNC were recruited for this cross-sectional observational study, and the data were analyzed using logistic regression analyses. The bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was used to measure skeletal muscle mass, and sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the 2019 diagnostic criteria of the Asian Sarcopenia Working Group (AWGS). RESULTS: Among the 617 patients enrolled in the study, 115 (18.6%) had sarcopenia. The prevalence of sarcopenia was 29.1% in males and 8% in females. In the multivariate analysis, older age (OR = 12.266, 95% CI: 3.864-38.934, p < 0.01), body fat (OR = 1.775, 95% CI: 1.511-2.084, p < 0.01), and sex (OR = 138.659, 95% CI: 42.382-453.642, p < 0.01) were independent risk factors for sarcopenia. Body mass index (BMI) (OR = 0.137, 95% CI: 0.09-0.21, p < 0.01), and total body water/fat free mass (TBW/FFM) (OR = 0.122, 95% CI: 0.031-0.474, p < 0.01) were protective factors for sarcopenia; we observed that sarcopenia decreased with increasing BMI and TBW/FFM. CONCLUSIONS: Male sex, advanced age, and excess body fat were identified as risk factors for sarcopenia in patients with HNC, whereas a higher BMI and TBW/FFM acted as protective factors against sarcopenia in these patients.

The Zhoushan Islands, are an important area for Mytilus unguiculatus aquaculture, and are threatened by potentially harmful algal blooms. However, a full understanding of the risks posed by their toxin residues is still lacking. M. unguiculatus samples were collected from the area between 2020 and 2021 and analyzed for their toxin profiles to assess the contamination status of shellfish toxins. The main toxins detected were the paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), gymnodimine (GYM), and domoic acid (DA). Nine PSTs components were detected, the dominant ones being C1, C2, and GTX5, with an overall detection rate of 85.7 %. The detection rate of DA was 55.05 %, and GYM was detected in all samples. The toxin levels in the samples were significantly lower than the European Union regulatory limits, but toxin contamination was generally universal.

OBJECTIVES: The accurate assessment of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in residents of residential care facilities (RCF) necessitates the use of proxy-reported instruments that possess robust psychometric properties. Generally, these instruments are modified versions of self-reported tools, with adjustments made to pronouns and instructions to better suit the respondent. Among such tools, the EQ-5D has emerged as a prominent instrument for evaluating HRQoL within RCF settings. This review aimed to synthesize evidence on psychometric properties of the proxy version of EQ-5D. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Residents in RCF. METHODS: An extensive search was conducted across 8 databases, covering articles from inception to May 29, 2023. We included a total of 20 articles reporting data that can be used to evaluate psychometric properties of this instrument in RCF. The quality appraisal employed the COSMIN Risk of Bias checklist, and data synthesis followed COSMIN methodology. RESULTS: Most of the included studies were conducted in Europe, with 75% using nursing staff as proxies. Missing data rates were 5% for EQ-5D and 26% for EQ VAS. Evidence of moderate certainty on construct validity of the EQ-5D index was inconsistent, although the EQ VAS showed sufficient construct validity supported by high certainty. EQ-5D index responsiveness evidence was limited, characterized by low certainty and inconsistency. Proxy-resident agreement ranged from poor to moderate, and improved with repeated administration for the "mobility" and "usual activities" dimensions. The lowest agreement was observed when staff served as proxies or the proxy-proxy perspective was adopted. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: This review offers an overview of the psychometric properties of EQ-5D as a proxy HRQoL measure in RCF. The suboptimal evidence on psychometric properties of EQ-5D indicated the need for more validation studies and cautious use of the instrument in RCF.
